| Welcome to this international survey on the history and present state of phoniatrics, the medical specialty for communication disorders. The collection has been compiled on behalf of the Union of European Phoniatricians. It is a first approach, a working paper, far from being complete and satisfactory in every respect. Nevertheless, the presentation comprises some 1000 printed pages, more than 100 photos, and 32 video-clips from 30 countries. All colleagues and friends from all over the world are cordially invited to join the group and add more details to this basic version in the internet. In spite of the editor’s endeavors for a more or less homogenous structure regarding contents and format, the individual contributions vary considerably. This is quite natural and reflects nothing but the wide individual variety of the contributing personalities and their perspectives. Finally, the quality of some of the home-made videos does not at all meet professional standards. But, let us accept them as, in parts, unique documents, that may enrich this presentation and add life to plain historical paper information. juergen.wendler@charite.de, editor |
