Damsté, Helbert P.
M.D., Ph.D., Prof.

Pieter Helbert Damsté, born 30 January 1925 at Bandung (Indonesia), from parents both of whom were outstanding amateur musicians as well as classical philologists. The first six weeks of his life he was called Piet subsequently his first name has been Helbert. Excelling in languages, but more interested in biology, Helbert decided to study medicine or rather human biology. Co-founder of the Student Humanist Movement at Utrecht in 1947. As a medical officer in the Dutch Air Force held his first lecture on a subject in aviation medicine. His interest in voice, speech and language pathology resulted in a dissertation, supervised by JW Van den Berg and E.Huizinga, on Oesophageal Voice in 1958, at the conclusion of his training in the specialty of ENT at Groningen.
A WHO Fellowship enabled him to continue his study in various centers of phonetics, phoniatrics and logopedics in Europe. Head of the dept. of Phoniatrics in the university ENT Clinic at Utrecht from 1959 till 1987, as an assistant-professor and full professor. Visiting professor at the university of Leuven from1967 till 1987.
As a co-founder of the first Cleft Palate team in the Netherlands, contributed to a series of tutorial articles on the management of short palate and related facial defects. Encouraged logopedists to team up with orthodontists for combined behavioural treatment of oral habits: thumb sucking, habitual mouth breathing, tongue thrust swallowing, and to engage in more intensive, body-oriented psychotherapy of stutterers. Chairman and advisor to support- and self-help groups of the laryngectomized and the stutterers.
Board member in scientific and professional societies, editor of national and international journals. Active on the Internet since five years, as author and publisher of an e-book, titled Concentric man: human systems of communication, adaptation and defence at www.damste.com. Nominated Officer in the Order of the Crown, Belgium and Officer in the Order of Oranje Nassau, the Netherlands.
