Dedo, Herbert H.
M.D., Prof.

Dr. Herbert Dedo attended the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of California,
San Francisco, from which he graduated with an MD degree in 1958.
His internship and residency were also at UCSF. While as an NM special fellow, he spent a year and a half in St. Louis with Dr. Ogura, and in Hamburg, Germany, studying laryngeal EMG in healthy and paralytic vocal cords with Professor Dunker. He joined the UCSF faculty in 196~, becoming department Vice Chairman in 1974, and a Professor of Otolaryngology in 1980. Dr. Dedo is credited with many innovative surgical procedures of the head and neck, and design of various ENT instruments used world-wide. His early research and interest in voice led him to the development of recurrent aryngeal nerve resection for treatment of spasmodic dysphonia (SD) in 1975, a revolutionary way of combating this disabling disorder. Together with Drs. Izdebski and Shipp, he conducted extensive studies on SD founded by NM between 1977 and 1983.
Their work is considered fundamental to the development of theories of nonfunctional nature of SD and current treatment techniques. Dr. Dedo is also credited with mastering the application of Teflon injection into the paralyzed vocal fold and development of many surgical procedures, which he described in his
surgical atlas Surgery of the Larynx and Trachea. For his research on laryngeal paralysis he received the prestigious Harris P. Mosher award in 1970, and Dr. Hans von Leden Lifetime
Achievement Award presented by the Pacific Voice and Speech Foundation in 1995. A prolific
writer, he has contributed nearly 100 clinical articles to clinical and scientific literature. His
clinical contribution to the field of Otolaryngology is widely recognized and respected. Besides his
clinical interest, Dr. Dedo is an accomplished bag-pipe player, a military history buff, and a
student of ancient medical instruments. Dr. Dedo serves as a consultant to many hospitals, and is a
member of numerous medical associations. He also serves as a physician to the San Francisco
Symphony and the San Francisco Opera.
