Founder and head of the phoniatric department at Charité Berlin 1907-1922
„Father of voice and speech/language pathology“.
Stimulation by the work of his father (the teacher for the deaf, Albert Gutzmann). Conclusion of the study of medicine in Berlin with the doctorate („On Stuttering“) in 1887. Job as generalist, private ambulatorium for speech-language patients 1891, nursing home for speech-language patients in Berlin-Zehlendorf, beginning of scientific work. Foundation of the periodical „Medizinisch-pädagogische Monatsschrift für die gesamte Sprachheilkunde“, later under the title „vox“). 1904 Ph.D. thesis about the respiratory movements in their relation to the speech disorders, 1905 inaugural lecture with the topic „Speech disorders as object of clinical teaching“. Thus, voice and speech/language pathology was established as an academic diclipline, and the year 1905 is valid as official year of foundation of phoniatrics.
1907 ambulatorium for speech/lnaguage disorders in the big lecture room of the policlinical institute for internal medicine at Charité, 1912 on cause of Killian moving to the throat and nose clinic at Charite, and foundation of a policlinic for speech/language and voice distrurbances. Extended teaching and research activity, students from all the world (among others Nadoleczny, Gutzmann jun., Zumsteeg, R. Schilling, Seeman, Stern, Sokolowski, Panconcelli-Calzia, Imhofer, Wethlo), „Berlin school of the organists“
Gutzmann was an unusual, highly talented man who has developed as an autodidact. He established voice and speech/language pathology as an independent medical specialty and found, at the same time, close relations to neighboring disciplines. He also recognized the social meaning of voice and speech/language disorders.
