Kittel, Gerhard

of the secondary school in Mosbach
in 1943.
After having completed compulsory labour service and military service, he studied medicine in Würzburg. He passed the State examination in 1951 and subsequently took his doctor’s degree. After serving an unpaid traineeship of one year at the Medical University Clinic, he worked at the Surgical Clinic in Ludwigshafen and qualified as medical specialist at the local ENT clinic later on. He joined the staff of the ENT clinic of the Erlangen-Nuremberg University in 1960 as assistant medical director and habilitated for ENT medical science and phoniatrics at this clinic in 1967 with the subject “ The Hypoxydosis of the Cochlea ”. His thesis for the habilitation was published as monograph and was awarded the E. W. Baader Prize.
He founded the educational establishment for logopaedics in Erlangen in 1968. He directed this institution until he retired in 1990.
He was appointed supernumerary professor and director of the independent department for phoniatrics and paediatric audiology with own bed ward in 1978.
He was able to demonstrate important findings particularly with regard to electrophysiologic examinations and objective computer analyses of the voice in more than 170 publications ( refer to extract from bibliography of G. Kittel ). In addition, there were numerous clinical publications with regard to cheilognathopalathoschises and about auditory, olfactory and voice disorders, including therapeutic methods. Numerous articles in books and manuals as well as his own books are evidence of his extensive expert knowledge. Kittel is the main author and publisher of the course book “ Phoniatrics - Paediatric Audiology “, the textbook “ Phoniatrics - Paediatric Audiology “ as well as the publisher of the congress volume of the UEP of 1988 with the subject: Objective and Semi-objective Possibilities for the Examination of Voice, Speech and Sense of Hearing. For twenty years, he was the publisher of the scientific magazine: Speech - Voice - Sense of Hearing, issued by the publishing house G. Thieme-Verlag in Stuttgart.

In addition to his clinical and scientific activities, his professional engagement was remarkable:

Paediatric Audiology
1988 president of the Union of European Phoniatrics

For twelve years, he was the managing director of the German Society for Phoniatrics and Logopaedics.
