Schutte, Harm Kornelis
M.D., Ph.D., Prof.

born May 2nd, 1942,

studied Medicine in Groningen
from 1962 – 1969,
Medical doctor degree in 1971,
In 1975 registered as medical specialist in Ear, Nose, and Throat Diseases.
From 1964 - 1969 working as a teaching assistant in the Laboratory of Medical Physics (Head: Prof. Dr. Jw. van den Berg). Topics: Stethoscope Acoustics, Vocal Tract Acoustics and Resonances of the Subglottal Tract, Experiments on excised Larynges. In 1969 associated with the ENT department (University Hospital) and the Lab. of Medical Physics on a project on Phonetograms. Dissertation work on aerodynamic investigations of the larynx of testpersons and voice patients. Promotor: Prof. Dr. Jw. van den Berg, finished in 1980. In the mean time clinical work on voice, speech and language disorders as a phoniatrician and Head of the Dept of Logopedics and Phoniatrics in the Groningen University Hospital. From about 1980 working on the aerodynamic model and properties of the Groningen button for laryngectomee rehabilitation. From 1984 working on the physiology of the singing voice together with Prof. D.G. Miller, formerly Professor of Singing at the Syracuse University, New York, U.S.A. Studying acoustic phenomena around the glottis; acoustics of the vocal tract under specific singing conditions; register phenomena in different types of singers and different singing styles. This work has lead to the publication of a monograph on: Registers in Singing, in 2000.
In the clinical field research was done on the classification of voice disorders based on measurements of the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms in comparison to normative data. Normative data has been obtained for flow and subglottal pressure measurement, other normative parameters for EGG and Glottal Volume Velocity Waveform, phonetograms, and perceptual factors of the variability of normal voicing have been published in a thesis by Sulter in 1998. Further clinical and research work on the physiology of the oesophageal voice production with the help of the Groningen Button has been conducted and published.
From 1994 on participation in BIOMED I - Free University Amsterdam 1994-1997. Concerted Action No 931611. ‘Surgery and Rehabilitation for Cancers involving the Larynx’.
From 1992 participation in the EC EUREKA project ‘The Artificial Larynx’ and a Dutch grant (STW) on ‘Voice Producing Element’, in association with the section Human Organ Technology. (1992 - 1994 Feasibility Study, 1994 - 1998 Research Phase). In these projects research has been done on improving tracheostoma valves – a inhalation type has been developed-, tissue connector for connecting devices permanently to the body, and a voice producing element to replace the voice source after laryngectomy.
Schutte has been Board member of the Dutch Association for Phoniatricians, (President from 1984 – 1995), UEP and Treasurer from 1986 – 1996, Board Member, Treasurer of the COMET, Board Member, Treasurer, and President Elect, in 1998, of the IALP. Editorial work for Folia Phoniatrica (Editor for Voice), Journal of Voice, Tijdschrift voor Stem-Spraak-Taalpathologie, and a few other journals.
Harm K. Schutte plays music on several wind instruments, and conducts Harmony Bands and Choirs occasionally.
