Seeman, Miloslav Prof. MUDr., DrSc. 1892 - 1975 He was born on 12. February 1892 at Veselí na Moravì. The family moved to Vienna and he attended the grammar school, the middle school and than the Medical Faculty of University in Vienna. Later he studied phonetics with Panconcelli-Calzia in Hamburg. He did not return to Vienna after this study, but he went to Prague. He founded the phoniatric out-patients department at the ENT clinic of Czech University, head prof. Otakar Kutvirt. This out-patients department performed its activity until 1956. In 1956 there was established an independent out-patient phoniatric department and in the year 1957 a bed-station for about 30 beds. In 1958 the Phoniatric Laboratory of Medical Faculty of Charles University was founded. The scientific activity of Seeman covers the whole field of phoniatrics. The main topics of his work are the studies about the voice after laryngectomy. He started this work in 1919 and he published his dissertation in 1924. The second problem of his interest was stuttering and his theory about the etiopathogenesis of stuttering is cited until know. The phoniatric department was established as an independent university clinic in 1967, and Seeman was the head of this clinic until his death in 1975. Seeman published about 200 scientific papers, his monography Speech Disorders in Children was translated into German, French, Swedish and Russian. He was one of the founders of the International Association for Logopedics and Phoniatrics, founder of Folia Phoniatrica and honorary president of the Union of European Phoniatricians. After the II. world war the Phoniatric department was the place, where many European phoniatricians took their education. The Phoniatric clinic was called the Seemans school. |
