IFOS Report 1997

Paper on Basic Phoniatric Education in the frame of ENT Training Programs (M. Hirano)

The IFOS paper is well known and, in principle, accepted in Japan, but not so generally in the whole region. In Indonesia, for example, there is only little knowledge of this ENT program, but considerable activity to occupy the field of communication disorders from other medical (neurology, pediatrics, rehabilitative medicine) and non-medical specialties (logopedics, voice therapists). In Japan, phoniatrics is already part of the official ENT training program with ongoing activities to put it into .practice. Competing claims are mainly coming from neurology and rehabilitative medicine, from logopedics and speech pathology. “In general, more ENT people are having interest in phoniatrics. The situation, however, differs greatly among countries. Phoniatrics can be an important field when a peaceful and highly developed society is maintained” (Hirano).
