IFOS Report 1997

M.N. Kotby

Only a few phoniatricians are working here, 5 out of 53 African and 12 in the Middle East countries (with phoniatrics as an independent specialty in some of them). The IFOS paper on phoniatric ENT education is known in these special areas, but not so in the whole region. All authorities accept the principles, but, the proposed educational demands for ENT specialists are considered to be too ambitious, and a reduced program with a considerably shorter curriculum is regarded as more appropriate and acceptable for this region. Whilst in Egypt close cooperation with speech pathology is working in good harmony, in some other countries speech pathology is taking the initiative alone as there is no competent medical specialty (phoniatrics).
