The Medical Specialty for Communication and Swallowing Disorders
European Board Examination of Phoniatrics
Our Mission
The mission of the European Board Examination of Phoniatrics (E.B.E. Phoniatrics) is to harmonize and guarantee the highest quality of medical training and clinical practice across Europe.
Established in 2025, the E.B.E. Phoniatrics represents a decisive step toward standardizing professionalism across borders. Conducted under the umbrella of the UEMS (Union Européenne des Médecins Spécialistes) and the auspices of the E.B.E. ORL-HNS, this examination serves as the "gold standard" for specialist training in Europe.
While it does not replace national exams, the title of Fellow of the European Board in Phoniatrics (FEBP) proves a candidate has mastered the full, high-standard European scope of care.
Key Objectives
Ensuring European Training Requirements (ETRs) are met consistently.
Strengthening Phoniatrics as a highly specialized field, whether treated as a primary specialty or a sub-specialty.
Providing a high-level international benchmark of excellence.
The Spectrum of Expertise
Based on the UEP-UEMS Phoniatrics Logbook, the exam assesses expertise in:
Voice disorders and phonosurgery
Speech and language disorders
Swallowing disorders
Hearing disorders in children and pediatric audiology
Phoniatrics is treated very differently across borders. In some countries, it is an independent medical specialty; in others, it is a subspecialty of ENT (ORL); and in some places, structured training doesn't exist at all.
