Cricopharyngeal Dysfunction: The Traffic Jam at the Pharyngo-Oesophageal Junction

World Swallowing Day is marked every year on 12 December to raise awareness of swallowing disorders. For the 2026 edition, the Swallowing Committee of the Union of European Phoniatricians brings together speakers from Belgium, Egypt, Finland, Turkiye and the United Kingdom for a three-hour online session on the cricopharyngeal muscle and the upper oesophageal sphincter — how they work, how their dysfunction is recognised, and what can be done about it.

The second half is devoted to case discussion with all presenters: neurological dysphagia, dysphagia in the head and neck cancer patient, dysphagia and Zenker’s diverticulum, and retrograde cricopharyngeal dysfunction.
